PhenQ: What’s in it?

Before we begin, let’s talk about the ingredients in PhenQ. You should always know what you’re putting into your body! PhenQ is a combination supplement marketed for weight loss. It contains various elements that are claimed to aid in shedding those unwanted pounds.

Calcium carbonate

Research suggests that individuals with low calcium intake are more likely to gain weight. While there is evidence that dairy intake may help with weight loss, this effect is mainly seen in people with low dietary calcium intake. So, if you’re lacking calcium, taking the 1250 mg of calcium provided by PhenQ might help with weight loss. However, you can easily find a regular calcium supplement or incorporate calcium-rich foods into your diet at a lower cost.

Caffeine anhydrous

Caffeine is a well-known stimulant that can increase energy levels, leading to more frequent and intense physical activity. The 300 mg of caffeine in PhenQ per day is equivalent to around 6 shots of espresso. If you have blood pressure or anxiety issues, it’s wise to consult with your doctor before taking PhenQ.

L-Carnitine Fumarate

L-Carnitine is an amino acid that helps convert fat into energy. Research suggests that supplementing L-carnitine can aid in weight loss, but the doses used in those studies were much higher than what PhenQ provides.


α-LACY, or α-LACYS RESET, is a proprietary blend of Alpha Lipoic Acid and Cysteine. Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that might have some effects on fat metabolism. However, the dose in PhenQ is much lower than the effective doses used in studies.


Nopal, also known as cactus pads, is a vegetable eaten in Mexican cuisine. It provides soluble fiber, which can make you feel fuller and aid in weight loss. Unfortunately, the 50 mg dose provided by PhenQ is unlikely to have any noticeable effects.

Magnesium stearate

Magnesium stearate is an inactive filler used to coat the pills and make them easier to swallow.

Capsicum extract

While the label says capsicum extract, it’s important to note that capsicum refers to a family of vegetables, including non-spicy chili and bell peppers. The compound that might help with weight loss is capsaicin, not capsicum.

Niacin powder

Niacin, or vitamin B3, is used by the body for fat metabolism. The dose in PhenQ is small and unlikely to make a difference unless you’re severely deficient in niacin.

Piperine extract

Piperine is a compound found in pepper that can help improve the absorption of other components in the supplement. However, the research on its weight loss effects is inconclusive.

Chromium picolinate

Chromium might slightly help with weight loss in people with insulin resistance problems, but its effects are limited. The dose in PhenQ is close to the effective doses used in studies.

Is PhenQ Worth It?

After analyzing the ingredients in PhenQ, it seems that caffeine is the primary component that could potentially aid in weight loss. Caffeine can provide energy for exercise and increase its frequency and intensity. Calcium and chromium may also have some limited effects on weight loss, but these effects are modest and can be achieved more cost-effectively with individual supplements.

PhenQ, essentially an overpriced caffeine pill with added calcium and chromium, may not be worth the price tag. A 60-pill bottle costs $90 CAD, equating to roughly $90 per month. By separately supplementing with caffeine tablets ($2-3 per month), calcium ($5-6 per month), and chromium ($3-4 per month), you can achieve similar results for around $10-13 per month.

Remember, taking PhenQ alone without making changes to your diet and lifestyle is unlikely to have any significant effects on weight loss. So, if you’re not ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle, PhenQ may not be the solution for you.
